Internationalization

Sometimes you want to use characters which are not part of the standard character set used in English. To do this it is necessary to specify that the UTF-8 character set will be used on your page. The META tag is used to do this and the META tag is used only in the HEAD section of the code for your web page. Inspect the code for this page to see how this is done.

Russian Language / Cyrillic Characters

You can set your keyboard to any available character set. For instance, these words were typed directly from the keyboard:

многа собака молоко спасибо небо флаг

If you are unable to configure your computer to emulate a foreign keyboard, you can use online translators to produce output using foreign characters. The following Russian words were generated from English using Google Translate (https://translate.google.com/):

утка улитка бежать правильно цветок

If you don't specify the UTF-8 character set, foreign characters will not appear properly on your web page. Check out this copy of this page without the meta tag.

Assignment

Translate the following short paragraph into Russian. Place the translation on a web page so that it displays properly:
Today we plan to travel to Omsk and visit an art museum. For lunch we will go to a restaurant and then we will go for a short hike a few miles outside the city. Later in the week we will fly to Moscow where we will tour the city. A few days later we will return to the USA.
Google translations are not perfect, but unless you are fluent in a language, sometimes they are the best way to produce a quick and reasonable translation.
