Lesson Ninety-eight: Converting Mixed Numbers To Improper Fractions


What is a mixed number? Well, here are a few:

A mixed number has a fraction part and a whole number part.
The mixed number is equal to .

But the mixed number is also equal to the improper fraction: .

An improper fraction is a fraction where the numerator is larger than the denominator.

Converting Mixed Numbers to Improper Fractions

Converting mixed numbers to improper fractions takes two steps:

1. Multiply the whole number by the denominator.
2. Add this product to the numerator.

Example:

Mixed Number: 3 1/7
Step One: 3 * 7 = 21    (Multiply whole by denominator)
Step Two: 21 + 1 = 22    (Add product and numerator)
Improper Fraction: 22/7
