Arithmetic Grade Six

Lesson Ninety-one: Fraction Pictures

Denominators
In this picture you know that the denominator is 42 because you can multiply its height (6) and its width (7), 6 x 7 = 42, to get the total number of little squares in the big box.
Here's another example:
In this picture you know that the denominator is 24 because you can multiply its height (3) by its width (8), 3 x 8 = 24, to get the total number of little squares in the big box.
We can use a verbal description of one of these pictures to figure out the fraction being represented. We can find the total number of squares in a big box by multiplying the width by the height. This product will be our denominator. The number of filled squares will be our numerator.
