Arithmetic Grade Six

Lesson One Hundred-Fifteen: Whole-Fraction Division II

Sometimes, when multiplying whole numbers and fractions, the answer can be a mixed number:

	PROBLEM: 7 ÷ 3/8 =

STEP ONE: Flip the second fraction and change
		  the operation to multiplication. (7 x 8/3 = )

	STEP TWO: Multiply. (7 x 8/3 = 56/3)

	STEP THREE: Convert to mixed. (56/3 = 18 2/3)

Here's another example:

	PROBLEM: 5 ÷ 7/10 =

STEP ONE: Flip the second fraction and change
		  the operation to multiplication. (5 x 10/7 = )

	STEP TWO: Multiply. (5 x 10/7 = 50/7)

	STEP THREE: Convert to mixed. (50/7 = 7 1/7)

Sometimes you will need to reduce:

	ORIGINAL PROBLEM: 4 ÷ 2/9 =

	FLIP and CHANGE OPERATION:	4 x 9/2 =

	REDUCE (if possible): 2 x 9/1

	MULTIPLY:	2 x 9/1 = 18

	CONVERT TO MIXED: not necessary

Now you get to try a few.
