Arithmetic Grade Six

Lesson One Hundred-Fourteen: Mixed Multiplication II

Mixed multiplication involves plenty of steps including two conversions, possible reducing, and multiplication. So, it's understandable that you might need a lot of practice to really master the entire process.

So, here's another example for you to study:

	ORIGINAL PROBLEM: 1 1/10 * 2 2/3 =

	CONVERT TO IMPROPER FRACTIONS: 11/10 * 8/3 =

	REDUCE (if possible): 11/5 * 4/3 =

	MULTIPLY: 44/15

CONVERT ANSWER TO MIXED: 2 14/15

If you can master all these steps, then you won't have any trouble with mutliplying mixed numbers. Here's yet another example:

	ORIGINAL PROBLEM: 2 1/3 * 1 4/5 =

	CONVERT TO IMPROPER FRACTIONS: 7/3 * 9/5 =

	REDUCE (if possible): 7/1 * 3/5 =

	MULTIPLY: 21/5

CONVERT ANSWER TO MIXED: 4 1/5

Now you get to try a few.
