Arithmetic Grade Six

Lesson One Hundred-Twelve: Fraction * Whole

When we multiply a fraction and a whole number our answer will be less than the whole number. Take this example for instance:

	3 * 1/3 = 1

Here's how you solve these kinds of problems:

	3 * 1/3 =

	1) multiply the whole number and the numerator of the fraction
	   (3 * 1 = 3)
	2) write this number as an improper fraction using the denominator
	   of the fraction
	   (3/3)
	3) convert this improper fraction into a mixed number: 1

Here's another problem:

	5 * 2/3 =

	1) multiply the whole number and the numerator of the fraction
	   (5 * 2 = 10)
	2) write this number as an improper fraction using the denominator
	   of the fraction
	   (10 / 3 )
	3) convert this improper fraction into a mixed number: 3 1/3

In order to successfully solve these problems you must remember how to convert an improper fraction to a mixed number:

Convert 22/7 to a mixed number.

	1) divide: 22/7 = 3 r1
	2) write the remainder over the denominator: 3 1/7
	3) reduce if necessary.

Now you get to try a few.
