Arithmetic Grade Six
Lesson One Hundred Thirty-eight: Miles Per Gallon
Many drivers are concerned about how fuel efficient there cars are these
days. Some cars, as you probably know, can go further on a tank of gas than
other cars. Usually fuel efficiency is expressed as miles per gallon. Some
cars can go 20 miles on a gallon of gas and other cars can go 50 miles on a
gallon of gas.
You can calculate fuel efficiency if you know two things: 1) the number of
gallons used, and 2) the number of miles covered. Let's say we are told
that a certain car covered 200 miles on 10 gallons of gas. To figure out the
miles per gallon we simply divide the miles covered by the gallons used:
200 miles ÷ 10 gallons = 20 miles per gallon
Here's another example. Let's say that a car covers 250 miles on 5 gallons
of gas, what is the fuel efficiency?
250 miles ÷ 5 gallons = 50 miles per gallon
