Arithmetic Grade Six

Lesson One Hundred Thirty-six: Word Problems

Jill goes to the store and buys 4 bags of chips and 2 quarts of ice cream. The chips cost 59 cents a bag and the ice cream costs $2.55 a quart. How much does she spend for this stuff?

	4 x .59 + 2 x 2.55 = $7.46

We can break this problem down like this if we want:
	4 x .59 = $2.36
	2 x 2.55 = $5.10
	2.36 + 5.10 = $7.46

Jill goes to the store the next day and buys six cans of beans for $.66 each and three jars of salsa for $1.23 each. How much does she spend for this stuff?

	6 x .66 + 3 x 1.23 = $7.65

	Problem Breakdown:
	6 x .66 = $3.96
	3 x 1.23 = $3.69
	3.96 + 3.69 = $7.65
