Lesson One Hundred Thirty-four: Tipping


You may have noticed that when you eat at a restaurant that has waitpersons, that it is customary to leave a tip. A tip is a way of showing appreciation for a service performed. There usually is no requirement that you leave a tip, but waitpersons usually expect some kind of tip (or gratuity, as it is sometimes called).

The table above presents bill amounts in column one and tipping rates in column two. The third column displays the resulting tips.

Method: To calculate a tip you simply multiply the bill by the rate and round to the nearest penny. So, if you receive a bill for $44.58 and you wish to leave a 15% tip, you simply:

44.58 * .15 = 6.69

The customary tipping rate is 15%, but people often tip at higher and lower rates. Leaving no tip is known as "stiffing" the waitperson.

The easiest tipping rate to figure out is a 10% tip:

Obviously you must round off to the nearest penny when tipping.
