Problems which ask you to add things up are very common. They aren't all that hard to recognize. It just requires that you read the problem and that you understand what it asks you to do.
Joe catches 5 fish in the morning, 2 after lunch, and 7 in the evening. How many fish does he catch in all?
5 + 2 + 7 = 14
