Arithmetic Grade Six

Lesson One Hundred Twenty-one: Number Drop

Although Number Drop is a simple addition activity, it does require you to follow several steps in order to successfully solve each problem. Although each step involves the same operation, each successive step does get somewhat more difficult since the numbers being added together get larger and larger. Many problems which you solve in mathmatics require that you follow a series of steps to find an answer. Here is an example:

  1) Add up a list of items.
  2) Divide this sum by the number of items in the list.

This example describes two steps. What is the result of following these steps for the following list:

  LIST: 6, 2, 7, 8, 3, 4.

  STEP ONE: 6 + 2 + 7 + 8 + 3 + 4 = 30
  STEP TWO: 30 ÷ 6 = 5

Following these steps gets you the average or mean of a group of numbers. This is just one example of a multistep problem. You will have to solve more and more multistep problems as you develop your arithmetic skills.
