Arithmetic Grade Six

Lesson One Hundred Eighty: Prime Factoring

One way to prime factor a number is to use factor trees. Here's a sample factor tree.
PRIME FACTORIZATION of 32: 2*2*2*2*2
PRIME FACTORIZATION of 64: 2*2*2*2*2*2
PRIME FACTORIZATION of 36: 2*2*3*3
FACTOR TREES: Here is an example of how 60 can be factored:

       60 60 60
     / \ / \ / \
    2 30 4 15 6 10
         / \ / \ / \ / \ / \
        5 6 2 2 3 5 2 3 2 5
            / \
           2 3

You will notice that regardless of how 60 is factored at the first level of the factor tree, that the leaves of the tree contain 2, 2, 3, and 6.

In general alway list the smaller number on the left side at each level of the tree.

Now you get to try a few of these yourself.
