Arithmetic Grade Six

Lesson One Hundred Seventy-one: Proportions

Take a look at the following problem:

	N	 5
       ---  =   ---
	10       50

    N =

The problem here is to find a number (N) which keeps the two fractions proportional. You probably remember finding equivalent fractions and basically that's what we are doing here.

To solve these kinds of problems we can use the following method:

	1. Divide denominator two by denominator one (50 ÷ 10 = 5).
	2. Divide numerator two by the answer from step one (5 ÷ 5 = 1).

	N = 1

Here's another example:

	 N	   8
	---   =   ---
	 7	   28

	1. 28 ÷ 7 = 4
	2. 8  ÷ 4 = 2

	N = 2
