Lesson One Hundred Seventy: Distance



The following equations show the relationship between distance, speed, and time:


	distance = speed * time
	
	speed = distance ÷ time

	time = distance ÷ speed

By the way, sometimes speed is referred to as rate.

Keeping these relationships in mind, it is possible to figure out any one of the three items, as long as we have the other two. Consider this problem:


	  Burt travels 800 miles in 20 hours. What was his average
	speed?

To find speed we divide distance by time:

	800 miles ÷ 20 hours = 40 miles per hour
