Arithmetic Grade Six

Lesson Eleven: Multiplication Review

Multiplication can be thought of as a short cut for adding the same number over and over. Consider this example:

  5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 30

Here we added six fives for a sum of 30. We can translate this addition problem to a multiplication problem like this:

  6 x 5 = 30

Here's another example:

  4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 28

Here we add seven fours for a sum of 28. We can write this as a multiplication problem like this:

  7 x 4 = 28

The answer to a multiplication problem is called the product. The order of the numbers we multiply together doesn't matter. Both 4 x 7 and 7 x 4 equal 28. In the same way 6 x 5 and 5 x 6 both equal 30.
