These are the rules for rounding to the nearest 1000th:
Rules for rounding:
1. If the digit in the ten-thousandths column is 4 or less round down. Example:
.4442 -> .444.
2. If the digit in the ten-thousandths column is 5 or more round up. Example:
.4445 -> .445.
Consider the following examples:
3.6665 -> 3.667 2.5331 -> 2.533 1.9319 -> 1.932 2.3335 -> 2.334 2.9122 -> 2.912 .9335 -> .934
Special Case:
If you have a number like 4.9995 you have to remember that it will have to round up to 5.000. Many times students are confused by this situation.
Here are a few more examples to help you out:
4.1434 -> 4.143 6.3719 -> 6.372 7.1828 -> 7.183 1.9243 -> 1.924 2.4345 -> 2.435 1.2335 -> 1.234
