Arithmetic Grade Six

Lesson Fifty-three: Dividing by Multiples of TEN

Dividing by multiples of 10 is a little more complicated than just multiplying by 10, but here are some easy examples to help you get started.

	80 / 20 = 4

        90 / 20 = 4 r10

        50 / 20 = 2 r10

        50 / 30 = 1 r20

When dividing by multiples of ten your remainders can be quite large. In fact, your remainder can be as large as one less than the multiple of ten you are dividing by.

Now take a look at these examples.

       99 / 20 = 4 r19

       89 / 30 = 2 r29

       79 / 40 = 1 r39

       99 / 50 = 1 r49

Remember that you can always check your answer like this:

   IF 99 / 50 = 1 r49

   THEN 50 x 1 + 49 = 99

Try a few for yourself!
