Lesson Forty-nine: Word Problems


Little Jimmy has five large boxes. Each large box contains three smaller boxes. Each of these smaller boxes contains nine pieces of candy. How many pieces of candy are there in all?


	5 x 3 x 9 = 135

	Each large box contains three smaller boxes: 5 x 3 = 15.
	So, there are 15 smaller boxes in all.

	Each smaller box contains nine pieces of candy: 15 x 9 = 135.
	So, there are 135 pieces of candy.

Jimmy has five large boxes. Each large box contains six bags of cookies. Each bag of cookies contains 40 cookies. How many cookies are there in all?

	5 x 6 x 40 = 1200

	Each large box contains six bags: 5 x 6 = 30.
	Each bag contains 40 cookies: 30 x 40 = 1200.
