Arithmetic Grade Six

Lesson Seventy-five: Decimal Division

Actually we can add as many zeroes as we might happen to need. Consider this example:

		  .5
		+-------
	    4 | 2.3
		 2 0
		 -----
		   3

We can't stop here since we can't have
	remainders when working with decimals.
So, we add a zero onto the end of the
	dividend.

		  .57
		+-------
	    4 | 2.30
		 2 0
		 -----
		   30
		   28
		 ------
		    2

But adding only one zero doesn't do the trick.
	So, we must add another!

		  .575
		+-------
	    4 | 2.300
		 2 0
		 -----
		   30
		   28
		 ------
		    20
		    20
		 -------
		     0

	And that solves the problem!

Here's another example.

		  .2
		+-------
	    8 | 2.1
		 1 6
		 -----
		   5

We can't stop here since we can't have
	remainders when working with decimals.
So, we add a zero onto the end of the
	dividend.

		  .26
		+-------
	    8 | 2.10
		 1 6
		-----
		   50
		   48
		 ------
		    2

But adding only one zero doesn't do the trick.
	So, we must add another!

		  .262
		+-------
	    8 | 2.100
		 1 6
		-----
		   50
		   48
		 ------
		    20
		    16
                 -------
		     4

	We need another zero!

		  .2625
		+-------
	    8 | 2.1000
		 1 6
		-----
		   50
		   48
		 ------
		    20
		    16
                 -------
		     40
		     40
		  -------
		      0

	And that solves the problem.
