Arithmetic Grade Six

Lesson Sixty-six: Decimal Subtraction

Study this problem:

      2.27
    - .34
   ---------

To complete this problem we will first have to do the following:
  1. Subtract the digits in the hundredths column
  2. Subtract the digits in the tenths column
But before you can subtract in the tenths column we must borrow from the ones column. Remember that often borrowing is called regrouping.

      1 12
      2.27
    - .34
   ---------
      1.93

The decimal point drops straight down from the problem to the answer.
