Study this problem:

To complete this problem we will first have to do the following:
  1. Add the digits in the thousandths column
  2. Add the digits in the hundredths column
  3. Add the digits in the tenths column
Along the way you will have to carry so that your final answer (showing the carrying) will look like this: 

       11
      .678
    + .345
   ---------
     1.023

Notice that the decimal point drops straight down from the problem to the answer.
