Arithmetic Grade Six

Lesson Sixty-two: Rounding to nearest 1000th

Remember these rules when rounding to the nearest 1000th:

Consider the following examples:

   3.6665 -> 3.667             2.5331 -> 2.533            1.9329 -> 1.933
   2.3335 -> 2.334             2.9122 -> 2.912             .9325 ->  .933

Rules for rounding:

1. If the digit in the ten-thousandths column is 4 or less round down. Example: .4442 -> .444.
2. If the digit in the ten-thousandths column is 5 or more round up. Example: .4445 -> .445.

Special Case:

If you have a number like 4.9995 you have to remember that it will have to round up to 5.000. Many times students are confused by this situation.

Here are a few more examples to help you out:

   4.4324 -> 4.432	6.7179 -> 6.718		7.8218 -> 7.822

   1.2423 -> 1.242	2.3455 -> 2.346		1.3325 -> 1.333
