Arithmetic Grade Six

Lesson Thirty-nine: X Problems

The rules of X Problems can change, but in this lesson you put the sum of the two side numbers in the top slot and their difference in the bottom slot.

Here's an X Problem before the slots have been filled:

Here is the same X Problem with the slots correctly filled.

To get the top answer we add 5 and -8 and we get -3 because 5 + -8 = -3.

To get the bottom answer we subtract 5 and -8 and we get 13 because 5 - -8 = 13.

  SUBTRACTING NEGATIVES

	IF -5 - 8 = -13

	THEN WHAT DOES -5 - -8 EQUAL?

SUBTRACTING A NEGATIVE IS THE SAME AS ADDING A POSITIVE

	-5 - -8 = 3

	-5 + 8 = 3

   Here's another example:

	3 - - 7 = 10

	3 + 7 = 10
