Arithmetic Grade Six

Lesson Thirty-eight: Subtracting Negative Numbers

When we subtract from a number which is already negative we end up with an answer which is even further from zero than the original number:

	-100 - 100 = -200

This is also true when adding a negative number to a negative number:

	-100 + -100 = -200

Subtracting a positive or adding a negative produces an answer which is smaller than the number at the front of the problem.
