Arithmetic Grade Six
Lesson Thirty-five: Time Word Problems
Sometimes we know when a movie begins and when it ends. From this we can
figure out its length.
STARTING TIME: 5:15
ENDING TIME: 6:45
MOVIE LENGTH: ????
To find how long the movie is you subtract the starting time from the ending
time. (The exception to this rule is when the movie begins before one
o'clock and ends sometime thereafter, but we won't deal with this special
situation in this lesson.)
6:45
- 5:15
------
1:30
MOVIE LENGTH: 1:30
Here's another example:
STARTING TIME: 6:45
ENDING TIME: 8:15
SOLUTION:
8:15
- 6:45
-------
1:30
MOVIE LENGTH: 1:30
Remember to borrow when necessary. Since one hour equals sixty minutes, we
add 60 to the minute's column when we borrow 1 from the hour's column.
