Arithmetic Grade Six
Lesson Thirty: Adding Feet and Inches
Here is a sample addition problem with feet and inches:
3 ft, 5 in
+ 2 ft, 3 in
--------------
5 ft, 8 in
This same problem could also be arranged like this:
3 ft, 5 in + 2 ft, 3 in = 5 ft, 8 in
When adding feet and inches, you simply add the feet together and you add
the inches together. The feet and inches remain separate unless you wind up
with more than 11 inches (in which case you need to regroup).
Here's another sample problem:
4 ft, 7 in
+ 3 ft, 3 in
--------------
7 ft, 10 in
As you know, feet is abbreviated ft and inches is abbreviated in.
