Arithmetic Grade Six

Lesson Twenty-three: Adding Large Numbers

Inspect this addition problem:
      6,437,875
    + 3,475,259
   --------------

It will be necessary to carry in this problem. The sum in the one's column is 14 and so a one will be carried to the ten's column. The sum in the tens column (including the one that we carried) will be 13 and so a one will be carried to the hundred's column. The sum in the hundred's column (including the one that we carried) will be 11 and so a one will be carried to the thousand's column. The sum in the thousand's column (including the one that we carried) will be 13 and so a one will be carried to the ten-thousand's column. The sum in the ten-thousand's column will be eleven and so a one will be carried to the hundred-thousand's column. The sum in the hundred-thousand's column (including the one that we carried) will be 9 and so we don't carry anything to the million's column. The sum in the million's column will be 9. Here's the problem all worked out:
      6,437,875
    + 3,475,259
   --------------
      9,913,134

Now you will try a few of these yourself.
