Arithmetic Grade Six

Lesson Twenty-one: Carrying

Now for something a little more challenging. Take a look at this example:

   458
  +275
  ----

STEP ONE: Add the numbers in the ones column. If the the answer is greater than 9, then we must carry:

    1
   458
  +275
  ----
     3

We get 13. We place the 3 in the tens column and we carry the one:

STEP TWO: Add up the tens column:

   11
   458
  +275
  ----
    33

STEP THREE: Add the numbers in the hundreds column:

   11
   458
  +275
  ----
   733

Here's another example:

   105
  +817
  ----

STEP ONE: Since the 5 and 7 in the ones column adds up to 12 and 12 is greater than 9, we must carry.

    1
   105
  +817
  ----
     2

STEP TWO: Adding up the numbers in the tens column we get 2.

    1
   105
  +817
  ----
    22

STEP THREE: Adding up the numbers in the hundreds column we get 9.

    1
   105
  +817
  ----
   922
