Lesson Twenty-one: Carrying
Now for something a little more challenging. Take a look at this example:
STEP ONE: Add the numbers in the ones column. If the the answer is
greater than 9, then we must carry:
We get 13. We place the 3 in the tens column and we carry the one:
STEP TWO: Add up the tens column:
STEP THREE: Add the numbers in the hundreds column:
Here's another example:
STEP ONE:
Since the 5 and 7 in the ones column adds up to 12 and 12 is greater than 9,
we must carry.
STEP TWO:
Adding up the numbers in the tens column we get 2.
STEP THREE:
Adding up the numbers in the hundreds column we get 9.
