Lesson One Hundred and Thirty-nine: Discount Sale

Sometimes stores run discount sales to attract customers or to reduce surplus stock. For instance, you may have seen sales advertised as "25% off" sales or "10% off" sales or even "50% off" sales. This means that the regular price has been reduced by the amount stated. Here are some examples using 10% off.

Regular PricePercent OffDiscountSale Price
$20.0010% $2.00$18.00
$30.0010% $3.00$27.00
$45.0010% $4.50$39.50

Here's how to calculate the sale price:

  1) FIND DISCOUNT: regular price * percent off = discount
	EXAMPLE: $20.00 * 10% = $2.00

  2) FIND SALE PRICE: regular price - discount = sale price
	EXAMPLE: $20.00 - $2.00 = $18.00

The easiest discount rate to figure out is a 10% tip:

	Regular Percent Discount	Sale
	Price Off Amount Price
     -----------------------------------------------------------
	$20.00 10% $2.00 $18.00
	$15.50 10% $1.55 $13.95
	$16.22 10% $1.62 $14.60
	$44.56 10% $4.46 $40.10

Obviously you must round off to the nearest penny when figuring out the discount amount.
