Arithmetic Grade Five

Lesson One hundred and Twenty-four: Rounding to nearest 100th

Remember these rules when rounding to the nearest 100th:

Consider the following examples:

   3.665 -> 3.67             2.531 -> 2.53            1.939 -> 1.94
   2.335 -> 2.34             2.912 -> 2.91             .935 ->  .94

Rules for rounding:

1. If the number in the thousandths column is 4 or less round down. Example: .442 -> .44.
2. If the number in the thousandths column is 5 or more round up. Example: .445 -> .45.

Special Case:

If you have a number like 4.995 you have to remember that it will have to round up to 5.00. Many times students are confused by this situation.

Here are a few more examples to help you out:

   4.434 -> 4.43	6.719 -> 6.72		7.828 -> 7.83

   1.243 -> 1.24	2.345 -> 2.35		1.335 -> 1.34
