Arithmetic Grade Five

Lesson One hundred and Twenty-three: Rounding to nearest 10th

Remember these rules when rounding to the nearest 10th:

Consider the following examples:

   3.66 -> 3.7             2.53 -> 2.5            1.99 -> 2.0
   2.35 -> 2.4             2.92 -> 2.90            .95 -> 1.0

Rules for rounding:

1. If the number in the hundredths column is 4 or less round down. Example: .42 -> .4.
2. If the number in the hundredths column is 5 or more round up. Example: .45 -> .5.

Special Case:

If you have a number like 4.95 you have to remember that it will have to round up to 5.0. Many times students are confused by this situation.

Here are a few more examples to help you out:

   4.44 -> 4.5		6.71 -> 6.7		7.88 -> 7.9

   1.23 -> 1.2		2.35 -> 2.4		1.33 -> 1.3
