Lesson One hundred seventy-three: Line Length

When talking about length in this lesson we won't worry about the units involved.

On the grid to the left there are four line segments:

  1. red (-3,8) to (5,8)
  2. green (-4,2) to (-4,-2)
  3. yellow (7,2) to (7,-1)
  4. blue (-1,-7) to (1,-7)
LENGTH OF RED LINE SEGMENT: 5 - -3 = 8

LENGTH OF GREEN LINE SEGMENT: 2 - -2 = 4

LENGTH of YELLOW LINE SEGMENT: 2 - -1 = 3

LENGTH OF BLUE LINE SEGMENT: 1 - -1 = 2

When calculating the length of a line segment always subtract the smaller value from the larger value.
