Arithmetic Grade Five

Lesson One hundred sixty-nine: Coordinate Pairs

You will notice that dots are plotted on the graph shown to the right. You will also notice that there are numbers along the bottom of the graph and numbers on the left side of the graph. Also you will notice that there are labels near each set of numbers. The bottom group of numbers are on the x-axis and the numbers along the left side are on the y-axis.

The locations of the dots are as follows:

  • cyan dot - (2,2), "two to the right and up two", x: 2, y: 2.
  • blue dot - (3,12), "three to the right and up twelve", x: 3, y:12.
  • red dot - (7,6), "seven to the right and up six", x: 7, y: 6.
  • green dot - (9,2), "nine to the right and up two", x: 9, y: 2.
  • yellow dot - (12,11), "twelve to the right and up eleven", x: 12, y: 11.
Three ways of describing location are given for each dot.

In the next activity you will use the first method of describing the
location of a dot. You will enter the coordinate pair without spaces like
this:

      (7,11)

Remember the x-value always comes first and the y-value comes second.

Now you get to try a few for yourself.
