Arithmetic Grade Five
Lesson One hundred and Fifty-nine: Volume
Let's say that we have a fishtank which is in the shape of a cube which
measures 10 inches on each side. What is it's volume?
We know that the volume can be expressed in cubic units such as cubic inches
or cubic feet or even cubic centimeters. In this case we are dealing with
inches.
We also know that the volume can be calculated by multiplying the height,
width, and length of the container. In this case we have a cube and so the
height, width, and length are all the same. So, we multiply 10*10*10 and get
1000 cubic inches.
Now let's say that we have a swimming pool that is 40 feet long, 20 feet
wide, and 5 feet deep. What is it's volume?
We get 4000 when we multiply the length, width, and depth of the pool. We
are dealing with feet, and so the answer is 4000 cubic feet.
