Arithmetic Grade Five
Lesson One hundred and Fifty-eight: Square Area
How many square feet are there in a rectangle with a width of 2 yards and
a length of 3 yards?
First of all we know that the area of the rectangle is 6 square yards. The
question asks us to convert this to feet. We know that there are 9 square
feet in each square yard and so the area of the rectangle in square feet is
54 square feet.
How many square inches are there in a rectangle with a width of 3 feet
and a length of 4 feet?
We can first find the area of the rectangle in square feet. A rectangle with
measuring 3 feet by 4 feet has an area of 12 square feet. The question asks
for the area in square inches. We know that there are 144 square inches in
each square foot and so the area of the rectangle (in square inches) is 12 *
144 = 1728 square inches.
