Arithmetic Grade Five
Lesson One hundred and Fifty-eight: Square Area
How many square feet are there in one square yard?
We know that one
yard is three feet long. So, there are 9 square feet in a square yard since
3 x 3 = 9.
How many square feet are there in a square with sides 2 yards long?
We know that a square with sides 2 yards long has an area of 4 square yards
(2x2=4). Therefore, this same square has an area of 36 square feet since a
yard is 3 feet long and 6x6=36.
How many square inches are there in one square foot?
We know that one
foot is twelve inches long. So, there are 144 square inches in a square foot
since 12 x 12 = 144.
How many square inches are there in a square with sides 3 feet long?
We know that a square with sides 3 feet long has an area of 9 square feet
(3x3=9). Therefore, this same square has an area of 1296 square inches since
36x36=1296.
