Arithmetic Grade Five

Lesson One hundred and Fifty-four: Eighths

Eighths:

Enlargement of an Inch: In addition to wholes, halfs, and quarters, this ruler also shows eighths. You should recall that 2/8 equals 1/4, that 4/8 equals 1/2, and so on. The lines representing 1/8, 3/8, 5/8, and 7/8 are the shortest. The next shortest lines represent 1/4 (or 2/8) and 3/4 (or 6/8). The second longest lines represent 1/2 (or 2/4 or 4/8). The longest lines represent wholes.

As you can see the lines representing each full inch are the longest. The lines representing the half inch mark between each inch mark are the next longest. The lines representing the one quarter and three quarter inch marks are slightly shorter than the lines representing one half inch. The shortest lines represent the one eighth, three eighth, five eighth, and seven eighth marks.

Usually when measuring an object or a line, you line up one end of the object or line with the zero end of the ruler. Then you see where the other end of the object or line comes out to on the ruler (providing that the ruler is longer than the object or line you are measuring).
