Lesson One hundred and Fifty-three: Measurement

Quarters, Halves, and Wholes:

Enlargement of an Inch: This diagram shows where the 1/4, 2/4, and 3/4 marks are located. Remember that 1/2 is equal to 2/4. This is an enlargement of what you might see on a ruler. Some rulers have more marks and some rulers don't use inches at all. So, what you see on any particular ruler can vary quite a bit depending on the ruler.

Here we see an enlarged section of a ruler. This example is probably longer than six inches (but the exact length could vary depending on your computer's screen settings).

As you can see the lines representing each full inch are the longest. The lines representing the half inch mark between each inch mark are the next longest. The lines representing the one quarter and three quarter inch marks are the shortest lines.

Usually when measuring an object or a line, you line up one end of the object or line with the zero end of the ruler. Then you see where the other end of the object or line comes out to on the ruler (providing that the ruler is longer than the object or line you are measuring).
