Lesson Ninety-eight: Parts of Wholes

When we find a fractional part of a whole number, the answer will be less than the whole number we are working with. For instance, one half of 8 is 4. Consider the following example:

  PROBLEM:

          2/3 of 15 =

 1. DIVIDE THE WHOLE NUMBER BY THE DENOMINATOR IN THE FRACTION
 2. MULTIPLY THIS QUOTIENT BY THE NUMERATOR.

          15/3 = 5
          5 x 2 = 10

Here's another example:

  PROBLEM:

          3/4 of 20 =

  1. DIVIDE THE WHOLE NUMBER BY THE DENOMINATOR IN THE FRACTION:

          20 / 4 = 5

  2. MULTIPLY THIS QUOTIENT BY THE NUMERATOR:

         5 x 3 = 15

In the next group of problems you will solve several of these problems.

Now you get to try a few for yourself.
