Arithmetic Grade Five
Lesson Ninety-three: Adding Mixed Numbers
Adding mixed numbers is slightly more complicated than just adding simple
fractions. Here's an example:
Sample Problem: 3 3/8 +
2 3/8.
Step One: Add whole numbers.
3 3/8 + 2 3/8 =
5 + 3/8 + 3/8.
Step Two: Add the fractions.
5 + 6/8.
Step Three:
Reduce the fraction (if necessary) 5 3/4.
ANSWER: 5 3/4.
Here's another example:
Sample Problem: 1 2/9 +
2 4/9.
Step One: Add whole numbers.
1 2/9 + 2 4/9 =
3 + 2/9 + 4/9.
Step Two: Add the fractions.
3 + 6/9.
Step Three:
Reduce the fraction (if necessary) 3 2/3.
ANSWER: 3 2/3.
Now you get to try a few for yourself.
