Arithmetic Grade Five

Lesson One Hundred and Seventeen: Mixed and Fraction Division

In the last lesson both the mixed number being divided and the fraction we were dividing by had the same denominator. In this lesson they will have different denominators.

Here's another example for you to study:

	ORIGINAL PROBLEM: 1 1/3 ÷ 1/4 =

	CONVERT MIXED TO IMPROPER: 4/3 ÷ 1/4 =

	FLIP and CHANGE OPERATION: 4/3 * 4/1 =

	REDUCE (if possible): 4/3 * 4/1 =

	MULTIPLY: 16/3

CONVERT IMPROPER TO MIXED: 5 1/3

Here's another example:

	ORIGINAL PROBLEM: 3 1/4 ÷ 1/6 =

	CONVERT MIXED TO IMPROPER: 13/4 ÷ 1/6 =

	FLIP and CHANGE OPERATION: 13/4 * 6/1

	REDUCE (if possible): 13/2 * 3/1 =

	MULTIPLY: 39/2

CONVERT IMPROPER TO MIXED: 19 1/2

Now you get to try a few.
