Arithmetic Grade Five

Lesson One Hundred and Sixteen: Mixed and Fraction Division

This lesson will deal with a special kind of division between mixed numbers and fractions.

Here's another example for you to study:

	ORIGINAL PROBLEM: 1 1/3 ÷ 1/3 =

	CONVERT MIXED TO IMPROPER: 4/3 ÷ 1/3 =

	FLIP and CHANGE OPERATION: 4/3 * 3/1 =

	REDUCE (if possible): 4/1 * 1/1 =

	MULTIPLY: 4

All the answers to the problems in this lesson will be whole numbers. This is because the fraction we are dividing by will divide into the mixed numbers used in these problems without remainders.

Here's another example:

	ORIGINAL PROBLEM: 3 1/4 ÷ 1/4 =

	CONVERT MIXED TO IMPROPER: 13/4 ÷ 1/4 =

	FLIP and CHANGE OPERATION: 13/4 * 4/1

	REDUCE (if possible): 13/1 * 1/1 =

	MULTIPLY: 13

Now you get to try a few.
