Arithmetic Grade Five

Lesson One Hundred and NINE: Multiplying Mixed Numbers

Once you have converted the mixed numbers to improper fractions you just multiply as usual. Remember to reduce if possible. Finally, you convert back to mixed.

	ORIGINAL PROBLEM: 2 1/2 * 1 1/3 =

	CONVERT TO IMPROPER FRACTIONS:	5/2 * 4/3 =

	REDUCE (if possible): 5/1 * 2/3 =

	MULTIPLY: 10/3

CONVERT ANSWER TO MIXED:	3 1/3

Here's another problem:

	ORIGINAL PROBLEM: 1 1/3 * 2 1/5 =

	CONVERT TO IMPROPER FRACTIONS:	4/3 * 11/5 =

	REDUCE (if possible): 4/3 * 11/5 =

	MULTIPLY: 44/15

CONVERT ANSWER TO MIXED:	2 14/15

Now you get to try a few.
