Arithmetic Grade Five

Lesson One Hundred and Three: Multiplying and Reducing Fractions

Multiplying and reducing fractions involves three steps:

	1. multiply the numerators
	2. multiply the denominators
	3. reduce the answer (if necessary)

Here's an example

	5/6 * 2/10 = 10/60

The GCF of 10 and 60 is 10.

	10/60 = 1/6

But you don't always get to reduce your answer as we see in this next example:

	1/7 * 3/5 = 3/35

3 and 35 have no common factors (other than 1).

	So, 3/35 cannot be reduced.

Now you get to try a few for yourself.
