Arithmetic Grade Five

Lesson Fifty-two: Decimal * Wholes

When you multiply a decimal value and a whole number the product will be less than the whole number:

	10 x .5 = 5 20 x .7 = 14

	30 x .2 = 6 100 x .75 = 75

Here's a step-by-step analysis of 30 x .2:

	  30 ORIGINAL PROBLEM
	 x.2
	-----

	  30 UNFINISHED PROBLEM - 30 x 2 = 60, but
x.2 we still need to place the decimal point
	-----
	  60

30 FINISHED PROBLEM - Since there is one
x.2 decimal point in the problem we must
----- have one decimal point in the answer
	 6.0

ANSWER: 6	6.0 can be rewritten as just plain 6
