Arithmetic Grade Five

Lesson Fifty-one: Decimal Multiplication

You should realize that .1 is more than .01 and that .01 is more than .001. You should also realize that .1 is more than .09. Study the following addition problems.

  .09 + .01 = .1
  ENGLISH: nine-hundredths plus one-hundredth equals one-tenth
  (Remember: .1 = .10)

  .009 + .001 = .01
  ENGLISH: nine-thousandths plus one-thousandth equals one-hundredth
  (Remember: .01 = .010)

  .0009 + .0001 = .0001
  ENGLISH: nine-10,000ths plus one-10,000th equals one-thousandth
  (Remember: .001 = .0010)

Really Small Products

If we find the product of .01 x .01 we wind up with a tiny product:

	.01 x .01 = .0001

Here are some more examples of multiplication problems which have tiny products:

	.04 x .3 = .012

	.02 x .02 = .0004

	.03 x .1 = .003
