Arithmetic Grade Five

Lesson Forty-five: Exponents

The little number that is raised above the other number is called the exponent. The exponent does not have to always be two. In fact, it can be any number. When the exponent is a 1 we get the following results:

	EXPONENT	VALUE
	31 9
	41 16
	81 64

When the exponent is a 0 we get the following results:

	EXPONENT	VALUE
	30 1
	40 1
	80 1

Raising a number to the third power is a little more interesting:

232^32x2x2=8
333^33x3x3=27
434^34x4x4=64
535^35x5x5=125
