Lesson Eighty-two: Equivalent Fractions

Equivalent Fractions
Here's a list of fractions which are equivalent to one-half.

  1	2	3	4	5	6	7	8
 --- --- --- --- ---- ---- ---- ----
  2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16

We could do the same thing for two-thirds:

  2	4	6	8	10	12	14	16
 --- --- --- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
  3 6 9 12 15 18 21 24

You should notice a pattern between the numerators and the denominators.

On the next page you will practice forming equivalent fractions like this:

          3 ?
         --- = ----
          4 12

To solve this problem do the following:
  1. divide the second denominator by the first (12/4 = 3)
  2. multiply the first numerator by your answer from step one ( 3 x 3 = 9)
And that's the answer:

          3 9
         --- = ----
          4 12
