Arithmetic Grade Five

Lesson Eighty: Computing Grade Point Averages

So let's say little Mikey gets the following grades on his report card.

        REPORT CARD
	Mikey Jones

	Language	B
	Arithmetic	C
	Social Studies	D
	Spelling	A
	Reading C

What is Mikey's grade point average?

STEP ONE: Convert grades to their number values.
STEP TWO: Add up the number values for the grades.
STEP THREE: Divide the total of the number values
		    by the number of grades.

	3 + 2 + 1 + 4 + 2 = 12
	12 / 5 = 2.4

So, Mikey has a GPA of 2.4 which means that his average grade is somewhere between a C and a B.

Here's another example:

        REPORT CARD
	Jenny Johnson

	Language	A	4
	Arithmetic	B	3
	Social Studies	B	3
	Spelling	C	2
	Reading A	4
		Grade Points: 16
		GPA: 3.2

In the above example, grade points are the sum of the numeric values of the grades. The GPA is computed by dividing the grade points by the number of grades (16/5=3.2).
