Lesson Twenty-one: Carrying
Now for something a little more challenging. Take a look at this example:
STEP ONE: Add the numbers in the ones column. If the the answer is
greater than 9, then we must carry:
STEP TWO: Add the numbers in the tens column (including the one which
we carried). If the answer is 9 or less just write the answer in the tens
column. If the answer is greater than 9 use the hundreds and the tens
column.
Here's another example:
STEP ONE:
Since the 5 and 7 in the ones column adds up to 12 and 12 is greater than 9,
we must carry.
STEP TWO:
Adding up the numbers in the tens column we get 18. We use the we place the
eighteen in the hundreds and tens column like this:
